GENERAL ONLINE CLASSES INSTRUCTION:

First, you will need to read the eBook or watch the videos from MyMathLab Homework Assignments to learn the topics. (All the important videos are assigned as part of your section assignments) You can ask the instructor questions via e-mail if you still do not understand the problem. (The best way to contact me is through my CSN email: eun.cha@csn.edu, or through the CANVAS email) I will be sending all the course announcements through CANVAS (You can choose an email address to have your CANVAS announcements forwarded to, so make sure this is an email you regularly check and is active). You will get as much help as you ask for, but most of the workload will fall upon you when you are taking the online class.

Second, you need to do homework assignments, quizzes, and online exams from MyMathLab by their due dates. You can redo each exercise from homework assignments an unlimited number of times within the availability period and 3 attempts for the online quizzes. Homework assignments and online quizzes average counts for 40% of your final course grade.

Last, you must travel to a proctored location to take the Testing Center Exam One and the Testing Center Exam Two. If you are a resident in the Las Vegas or Henderson area, you must take the tests in a CSN Testing Center of your choice - West Charleston, North Las Vegas or Henderson Campus. You can find their locations and hours at http://www.csn.edu/testing/. If you live outside Les Vegas or Henderson area, you must take the tests from the college testing center in the town in which you are a resident. (Provide proctor name telephone number, and e-mail address to the instructor of the course as soon as possible, but no later than one week prior to each exam date.)

 

TEXTBOOK: MyLabMath with Pearson eText for Statistics: Informed Decisions Using Data with Integrated Review 5th Edition, by Sullivan Michael (No required of hard copy of the textbook, but you must purchase MyMathLab access code that accompanies our course textbook. This can be purchased online as you register. My registration instructions at the end of this syllabus will walk you through registering and paying for the code. The ebook is included as part of the required MyMathLab access. If you do not have the funds for the code by the start of the semester, you may use the 14 days of free access.)

Testing Center Exam One: Wednesday, March 18 to Thursday, March 19.

Testing Center Exam Two: Wednesday, May 6 to Thursday, May 7. There will be absolutely no Make-up for exams. CSN policy prohibits an instructor from issuing a W grade.

 

PREREQUISITE: Math 124 or Math 126 with a grade of c or better, or a satisfactory ACT/SAT/Placement Test Score.

CORSE OBJECTIVES:     

  1. Understand and apply basic probability and statistical methods.
  2. Interpret and present data using descriptive statistics and graphs.
  3. Construct point and intervals estimation for parameters based on data.
  4. Conduct hypothesis testing using data.
  5. Analyze data using appropriate statistical analyses such as linear regression.

 

HOMEWORK/QUIZZES: Once you are done with reading and learning from the eBook, videos, and the instructor lecture notes, you will need to do homework and exams from MML by their due dates. (Use the MML “Course Calendar” to examine relevant dates) You will have to earn an 80% or better to move on to the next homework assignment and you may rework each exercise an unlimited amount of times within the available time period given and 3 attempts for the online quizzes. The last day you can log in to any homework assignments are May 7th. Go to www.Coursecompass.com to register. The Course ID is cha62775. To register for MyMathLab you will need to have a valid e-mail address (Sometime I will use this email to contact the students) and a student access code (included with your textbook or bought separately), and a course ID code.

 

MIDTERM/FINAL EXAM: You must travel to a proctored location to take the midterm (Exam one) and the final exam (Exam two). (These exams are on a computer (MML), closed-book exams.) If you are a resident in the Las Vegas or Henderson area, you must take the tests in a CSN Testing Center of your choice from- West Charleston, North Las Vegas, or Henderson Campus. You can find their location, hours, and appointments instruction at http://www.csn.edu/testing/.

 If you live outside Les Vegas or Henderson area, you must take the tests from a college testing center in the town in which you are a resident. (Provide proctor name, telephone number, and e-mail address to the instructor of the course as soon as possible, but no later than one week prior to the test dates.)

Warning: You must bring a picture identification in the form of a U.S. Driver License, a passport, or a U.S. Military ID to the testing location. Nothing else will be accepted, especially not a school ID.

 

GRADING: Quizzes Average:                           25% (MyMathLab Exam)

      H.W. Average:                                15% (MyMathLab H.W.)

      Midterm Exam (Exam one):            30% (MML at The Testing Center)

      Final Exam (Exam two):                  30% (MML at The Testing Center)

                        There will be no make-up Exams, and Final (In order to take a make-up quiz and exam, the instructor must be notified of the emergency by phone or e-mail on the day of the exam, and the instructor must receive documentation of emergency within a reasonable time period)

GRADING SCALE:       90 -100 = A                                                                                                                                                                 80 - 89 = B                  

            70 – 79 = C                  

                                    60 – 69 = D                  

             Below 60 is an F 

Final grading adjustments are left to the instructor. Determining factors are attitude, class participation, and attendance. Each student’s class grade will be determined by the breakdown above, period. So, please don’t ask for a grade you did not earn through satisfactorily completing the above assignments.

 

CALCULATORS: Although a calculator is not required, a ‘Scientific Calculator’ is recommended. The student is expected to learn how to use their calculator on their own.

 

EXTRA CREDIT: Absolutely no extra credit work will be offered in this course.

 

WITHDRAWALS: If you stop attending class or quit completing the required work, you will receive a grade based on your percentage shown above on the grading scale. If you wish to be withdrawn from this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop the course by the drop date listed in the college catalog/schedule of classes, which for this semester is March 27th. CSN policy prohibits an instructor from issuing a W grade.

 

CHANGES: The instructor reserves the right to change the course syllabus, schedule, and policies as necessary. Students will be given appropriate notification in the event of any corresponding changes.

MyMathLab Login Instructions

1.) Purchase a MyMathLab Access Code from the bookstore or at pearsonmylabandmastering.com. The following is an image of the purchased item, which is a tri-folded card.  On the inside of the card, there is a gray strip of tape covering the alpha-numeric PIN code.

 

2.) Go to http://mymathlab.com and log into MML.

  • Under Register, click Student.
  • Enter your instructor’s course ID: cha62775, and click Continue.
  • Sign in with an existing Pearson account or create an account: If you have used a Pearson website (for example, MyITLab, Mastering, MyMathLab, or MyPsychLab), enter your Pearson username and password. Click Sign in.

If you do not have a Pearson account, click Create. Write down your new Pearson username and password to help you remember them.

  • Select an option to access your instructor’s online course: Use the access code that came with your textbook or that you purchased separately from the bookstore.
  • If available, get 14 days of temporary access. (Look for a link near the bottom of the page.)
  • Click Go To Your Course on the Confirmation page. Under MyLab & Mastering New Design on the left, click Spring2020 – Online Math152. Introduction to Statistics to start your work.

Retaking or continuing a course?

If you are retaking this course or enrolling in another course with the same book, be sure to use your existing Pearson username and password. You will not need to pay again.

Faculty E-Alert (The Electronic Early Warning System): The Faculty E-ALERT system is used by faculty members as a confidential means to submit, to Retention Services, the names of students having academic problems in a class so that they can be offered timely assistance. Faculty places the referral through CSN’s restricted Web Grading system. The E-Alert System is managed by the Office of Student Retention Services.

DRC (Disability Resource Center): If you have a documented disability that may require assistance, you will need to contact the Disability Resource Center (DRC) for coordination of your academic accommodations. For those students who would like to earn a little extra cash, stop by the DRC to fill out a job interest card.
